AI Designer
Designs visual identity, illustration and interfaces with AI inside the production loop, not just the ideation stage.

What this role actually is
An AI Designer ships finished visual work — identity, illustration, interface, campaign assets — where generative tools do real production work rather than producing mood boards nobody uses. The craft is unchanged: type, hierarchy, colour, composition, and a point of view. The instruments are new and inconsistent.
The distinguishing skill is knowing which generated output is usable, which needs to be redrawn by hand, and how to keep a system coherent across dozens of surfaces when the tool has no memory of the last one.
The line in the sand
What it is NOT
Not "makes AI images".
A folder of generations is not a design portfolio. The evidence is work that was applied to something real and survived being seen by users or customers.
Not a prompt library.
Prompting is one step in the pipeline. The role is the whole pipeline, including everything corrected by hand afterwards.
Not a replacement for a designer.
It is a designer whose production stage got faster. Designers who refuse the tools and prompters who never learned design both fail this standard, for opposite reasons.
Output
What they actually ship
- Published visual work a stranger can view — site, product, campaign, publication
- A design system or identity applied consistently across real surfaces
- Illustration or image work with the AI step stated honestly
- Interface design shipped into a live product, not a static mockup
- Repeatable style pipelines rather than one lucky output

Depth
The proof standard
Tier 1
Core
Shipped identity, product or campaign design where generative tools were central to production, applied across multiple real surfaces. Can explain what was generated, what was redrawn, and what was discarded.
Tier 2
Working
Published finished design work using AI in production, with consistent quality across pieces. Systems thinking may still be informal.
Tier 3
Light
Produced design experiments and single pieces with AI tools. Not yet applied across real surfaces.
Depth is what the builder claims. The badge is awarded separately, from the evidence — read the standard every badge is judged against.
Evidence
What a strong portfolio piece looks like
One published piece of work plus a short note on where AI entered the process and what had to be fixed by hand. The honest account of the fixing is what separates a designer from an operator of a generator.
Market
Market snapshot
Hiring happens under Brand Designer, Product Designer and Visual Designer, with AI capability treated as an unnamed bonus rather than a stated requirement. Studios and brands are quietly rebuilding production pipelines around these tools while advertising none of it, which leaves the skill valuable and completely unlabelled.
