What this role actually is
An AI Generalist is the person who picks up a new problem every week and figures out how AI can get most of the way there. One day it is a written brief, the next it is a cleaned dataset, a generated image, a spreadsheet model, or a simple automation. The job is breadth plus judgment, not depth in a single craft.
The value is knowing what is good enough, what is unsafe to automate, and when the right move is to stop and bring in someone who specialises. A generalist who pretends to be a specialist is a liability. A generalist who knows the boundary is force multiplier.
The line in the sand
What it is NOT
Not a specialist.
A generalist can do many things with AI; they do not replace a dedicated AI Product Engineer, Agent Engineer or AI Video Producer. The role is adjacent, not overlapping.
Not "just prompts ChatGPT".
Prompting is the entry fee. The skill is choosing the right tool, chaining outputs, checking quality, and stitching the result into a real workflow.
Not a job title most companies post.
It is usually hired under Operations, Marketing, Founder Associate or Growth. The people doing the work rarely have "AI" in their title yet.

Tier 1
Core
Can show a portfolio of at least three real deliverables in different domains, explain which tool was chosen for each and why, and name at least one case where they stopped and handed work to a specialist. Quality is consistent even across unfamiliar tasks.
Tier 2
Working
Regularly ships varied AI-assisted work inside a company or for clients. Quality is uneven across domains but improving, and they know their limits.
Tier 3
Light
Has used AI across several different task types. Still learning which outputs are safe to hand off and which need review.
Depth is what the builder claims. The badge is awarded separately, from the evidence — read the standard every badge is judged against.
Evidence
What a strong portfolio piece looks like
Three different deliverables from three different domains — for example, a research brief, a piece of copy, and a generated image set or spreadsheet model — plus a one-paragraph note on each explaining the tool choice and one thing that had to be fixed by hand. Range and self-awareness are the proof.

Market snapshot
The most common hidden AI role in companies today. It rarely appears on job boards because it is hired as a skill inside another title. Demand is growing fastest at startups and small teams that need one person to absorb a wide surface area of AI work without hiring five specialists.
