AI Publisher

Produces long-form documents — books, courses, curricula, reports — with AI in the pipeline and a human accountable for the result.

Definition

What this role actually is

An AI Publisher takes a body of knowledge and turns it into a finished, structured artifact someone can read or complete: a book, a course, a curriculum, a research report. AI does drafting, restructuring, summarising and formatting; the human decides what is true, what belongs, and what order it goes in.

The work is mostly editorial judgment under volume. Generating a hundred pages is trivial now. Producing a hundred pages that hold together, teach something, and do not repeat themselves is the entire job.

The line in the sand

What it is NOT

Not an AI content writer.

Content writing optimises for volume and search ranking. Publishing optimises for a coherent artifact somebody finishes.

Not "wrote a book with ChatGPT".

An unedited generated manuscript is the failure mode this role exists to prevent. The evidence is structure, editing and a reader who got to the end.

Not a plan or an outline.

A finished artifact is the requirement. Courses in progress and manuscripts in draft are not evidence of this role.

Output

What they actually ship

  • Finished, publicly readable artifacts — a published book, a live course, a released report
  • Structure that holds across length: consistent voice, no repetition, real progression
  • An editorial process stating what AI drafted and what the human rewrote
  • Curricula with assessment, not just material
  • Evidence of readers or learners, not just a published link

Depth

The proof standard

Tier 1

Core

Published a substantial long-form artifact with real readers or learners, produced with AI in the pipeline. Can describe the editorial process and name what the model got wrong at length.

Tier 2

Working

Published a finished, publicly readable artifact using AI in production. Structure is sound; audience may be small.

Tier 3

Light

Produced long-form drafts and partial courses with AI. Nothing finished and published yet.

Depth is what the builder claims. The badge is awarded separately, from the evidence — read the standard every badge is judged against.

Evidence

What a strong portfolio piece looks like

One finished artifact a stranger can read or take, plus a note on where AI drafted and where the human rewrote. Length is easy to produce now; a reader finishing it is not.

Market

Market snapshot

Almost entirely untitled. The work is bought as freelance course production, ghostwriting, curriculum design and research reporting, priced per artifact rather than per hour. Buyers are drowning in generated material and paying premiums for anyone who can prove an edited, finished result.
