Removes repeated human work from a business by wiring tools, data and models into workflows that run without anyone watching.

Definition
What this role actually is
An Automation Engineer finds work a human is doing repeatedly and makes it stop being a human's job. In practice that means connecting the systems a business already uses — CRM, inbox, sheets, billing, storage — and putting a model into the steps that used to need judgment.
It is the most commercially immediate AI role that exists. The output is measured in hours removed and errors avoided, not in technology used, and the best people in it are often not developers.
The line in the sand
What it is NOT
Not an Agent Engineer.
Automations follow a path the builder defined. Agents choose their own. Both are legitimate; conflating them oversells one and undersells the other.
Not "knows Zapier".
The tool is trivial. The skill is mapping a messy real process accurately enough that the automation survives contact with the exceptions.
Not a developer role by default.
Many of the strongest automation engineers write little code. Requiring a computer science background for this role filters out the people who are best at it.
Output
What they actually ship
- Live workflows running in production against real business data
- Integrations across systems never designed to talk to each other
- Error handling, retries and alerting for the cases the happy path ignores
- Documentation the client can maintain after the builder leaves
- A measured before-and-after: hours saved, error rate, cost

Depth
The proof standard
Tier 1
Core
Built automations running in production for a business other than their own, with a stated measurable outcome. Can explain the exceptions the workflow handles and what happens when it fails.
Tier 2
Working
Built and deployed working multi-step automations that someone actually depends on. May be for their own business or a single client.
Tier 3
Light
Built functioning automations for personal use or as practice. Not yet load-bearing for anyone.
Depth is what the builder claims. The badge is awarded separately, from the evidence — read the standard every badge is judged against.
Evidence
What a strong portfolio piece looks like
A workflow diagram plus the number it moved — "this replaced six hours a week of manual invoice matching, and error rate went from 4% to under 1%." The number is the proof. A screenshot of an n8n canvas with no outcome attached proves nothing.
Market
Market snapshot
The highest-volume freelance AI work available today, and the fastest path to paid work for a new builder. Almost never posted under a consistent title — it hides inside Operations Manager, Business Analyst, Solutions Engineer and RevOps postings. Small and mid-size businesses hire for this constantly; almost none of them know what to call it.
